Landfill overflow and illegal dumping has led to the accumulation of five documented floating oceanic garbage patches, also known as gyres: the North Atlantic Gyre, South Atlantic Gyre, North Pacific Gyre (including the notorious Great Pacific Garbage Patch or Pacific Trash Vortex), South Pacific Gyre, and Indian Ocean Gyre.

In the Indian Ocean, on five islands located in the Andaman Sea, local fishermen are undergoing training and receiving compensation for collecting and sorting some of the Polyethylene terephthalate plastics (PET), Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE) that went into making this watch band.

This important endeavor is made possible through the implementation of a social enterprise by the Swiss non-profit Jan & Oscar Foundation and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The collected plastic is carefully registered, washed, and shredded for reuse.By using recycled plastic sourced directly from the ocean, together we actively contribute to our planet's sustainability. By transforming this waste into a functional and visually appealing product, we hope to raise awareness about plastic pollution and promote responsible consumption.
